The Beautifful Journal
There's nothing better than a fresh set of gels — that glossy, just-done finish that makes you want to show your hands off to everyone. But a few simple habits can be the difference between your gel lasting a week and lasting three.
Here are my favourite tips for getting the most out of your manicure between appointments.
Your gel is fully cured under the lamp, but the skin and nails around it need a little time to settle. Try to avoid long, hot baths or washing up right after your appointment — give it a couple of hours where you can.
Hot water and harsh cleaning products are the number one enemy of a long-lasting manicure. A cheap pair of rubber gloves protects your gels (and your skin) and can add days, sometimes a week, to how long your set looks fresh.
This is the tip everyone skips and it makes the biggest difference. Massaging a little cuticle oil into your nails every day keeps them flexible, stops the gel becoming brittle, and helps prevent lifting and chipping. Pop a bottle by your bed and make it part of your night-time routine.
I know, it's so tempting to peel that label or pop that ring pull with your nail. But using your nails as little tools is the fastest way to catch and lift the edge of your gel. Reach for a proper tool instead — your manicure will thank you.
If you spot a tiny bit of lifting, please don't pick at it! Peeling gel takes the top layers of your natural nail with it and can leave them thin and sore. If something lifts, get in touch and we'll sort it properly.
Gel looks its best for around two to three weeks. Booking your next appointment before your set has grown out keeps your nails healthy and saves them from being knocked or snapped while you wait.
Look after them and they'll look after you. A little oil, a pair of gloves, and a gentle touch will keep your gels looking salon-fresh for as long as possible.
